Preparing For Your First Visit

Parental involvement

Northern Kentucky Pediatric Dentistry embraces parental presence during the appointment. Having parents involved in our initial visits enables our team to review medical history, teach brushing/flossing techniques and to discuss any dental issues directly.

Your role as a parent is essential in preparing your children for their dental visit. Speak with them about coming to the dentist as a positive experience-never use it as a punishment.

Please avoid phrases such as,

"it won't hurt,"

"I won't let the doctor hurt you,"

"shot," "drill" or "needle,"

As they may cause unnecessary anxiety. Keep in mind that if your child is scared and crying, this is normal.

At Northern Kentucky Pediatric Dentistry, we specialize in dealing with these situations and will work on developing a special relationship with your children, even if it takes more than one appointment to earn their trust.

special needs

Many times, special children also have special dental needs. Some special children are at high risk for tooth decay, gum disease, or oral trauma. Research shows that dental disease is preventable-as long as the dental care is started early and followed through consistently. At Northern Kentucky Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is to customize a prevention plan to match the special needs of your children, in order to maintain their healthy smile for life.

age of first visit

Take your baby to the dentist by their first birthday.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Dental Association all recommend scheduling an appointment once your child's first tooth has come in, which is usually between 6 and 12 months.

As an introductory meeting, this first friendly visit gives our team a chance to check for signs of early decay, as well as talk to you about cavity prevention and proper teeth-cleaning techniques.

In addition, in the event of a tooth injury or emergency, you will have already established a dental home at Northern Kentucky Pediatric Dentistry just in case.
